Tucumcari at a Glance
Tucumcari is often referred to as the gateway to New
Mexico because of its close proximity to the Texas
border and its location on historic Route 66. Rich in history, this area was once
inhabited by dinosaurs, remains of which can be seen at the Mesalands
Community College's Dinosaur Museum. Inside, a rare skeleton of a Torvosaurus,
related to the Tyrannosaurus, is on display along with numerous other natural
history exhibits. Visit Tucumcari
Depot & Railroad Museum and learn about Tucumcari's growth from a tent
town in 1901 to the thriving community of today. Travel to Ute
Lake State Park or Conchas
Lake State Park, both found within a 20-minute drive and boasting camping,
fishing, swimming and many other activities. Tours are conducted at the Tucumcari
Mountain Cheese Factory, teaching guests how cheese is made and letting them
sample a wide variety of product.
